About Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area

Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area is a state-managed park located along the northeastern shore of Lake Almanor in Plumas County, California. The park encompasses diverse landscapes including forested hills, open meadows, and a significant stretch of lakefront providing ample opportunities for water-based activities and camping. Lake Almanor, a large reservoir formed by the Almanor Dam on the North Fork of the Feather River, serves as the centerpiece of the park. Visitors enjoy fishing for trout, bass, and salmon, as well as boating, kayaking, and swimming. The park's hiking trails wind through pine and fir forests and occasionally open to panoramic lake views. Standish-Hickey offers developed campgrounds nestled among trees, making it a favorable destination for family camping and outdoor enthusiasts. The area's ecology is marked by mixed conifer forests, supporting species such as black bears, deer, and a variety of birdlife, including bald eagles and ospreys, especially during migration seasons. Historically, the region was inhabited by the Maidu people and later developed for hydroelectric power under Pacific Gas and Electric Company ownership, which continues to influence local land use. The park provides a peaceful escape with scenic drives around Lake Almanor, picnic areas, and spots for wildlife observation. Its easy accessibility from nearby communities makes it a popular weekend destination throughout much of the year, especially in summer and early fall. Winter brings snow to surrounding higher elevations, attracting visitors interested in snow sports nearby while the park itself remains quieter and less accessible.
